| Hey All, On an unrelated note, what does "anlass" mean? I looked it up and it says it means: Occasion, cause, reason, event, or visit was; which really doesn't clear it up for me. Is it someone's name? Just curious. Dan S |

| I am not sure how Anlass translates, but I know is that it is part of the starting process for the inline and V series engines. __________________ |

| Hey All, So, on Jeff's picture below, use Magneto 1 for "the occasion of starting". And crank the handle of the ebay part for "the occasion of starting". That's the idea? Dan S

| Hey Hans, So, just plain start, none of that "occasion" stuff. Well that's alot easier! I went back to Google translator and tried start, starter, starting, etc. It was still hard to get what I wanted even when I knew the right words! Thanks! Dan S |

When you guys have a good look at Jeffs posted illustration you can see that the Anlass magnet is only wired to the magneto shown on the right in this illustration. Wire number 11. (on the Mercedes engine it's on the left side) It wires to the middle of the rotorhouse. You don't have that connection on the left shown magnet. When you take off the cover of the magnet this is what you see.
The Anlass wire is connected to the middle connector on the rotor wich leads to the small pin you see on the left of the brush. When you turn the Anlass magnet the so often spoken about "sparkshower" appears from this small pin. So not in one of the cylinders! Only in the rotorhouse. The spark will take the shortest way and jump to the brush wich is in the right position to fire the cylinder it's set on. Probably sparks also jump to the other connections firing other sparkplugs also. As soon the Anlasser made the first sparks to fire the first cylinder the "regulair" magnet takes over because the magnet switch is set on 1Anlass. After starting only the left side magnet works igniting only the left side row of sparkplugs. After some warming up the engine you switch to magnet 2 igniting the right side row of sparkplugs. After some more warming up you switch to both magnets igniting both left and right side sparkplugs. Meanwhile also setting the retard/ advance lever. | The danger in fighting these pilots was they were not only competent enough to fly their planes, but smart and skilled enough to be able to start them in the first place! And these were considered EASIER to understand than the rotaries! |
